Safe & Found

by MedicAlert

What is Safe & Found?

It's a lifeline for families navigating the scary world of cognitive disabilities and wandering behavior.

1. When a loved one is reported missing, our 24/7 specialists spring into action. We create a missing person alert and send to local authorities – including hospitals and law enforcement – to expand the search.

2. When someone is found wandering, nonverbal or disoriented, first responders or bystanders use the member’s MedicAlert ID to confirm their identity via our toll free hotline, printed on every ID.

3. Once the person is identified, MedicAlert gives first responders their critical health information, so they get the fastest, most accurate care.

4. Then, we connect first responders and the person’s emergency contacts to get them home, Safe and Found. Another person protected–another family reunited.

MedicAlert is the only medical ID provider with Safe & Found services for people with autism, Alzheimer’s & dementia. The trained specialists who staff our 24/7 live emergency hotline provide real-time support to families & caregivers during high-stress situations.

Gary's Wandering Scare: MedicAlert to the Rescue

“My husband Gary has Alzheimer’s and I’m his full time caregiver. One day I was exhausted and took a much-needed nap while Gary was watching TV. But when I woke up, Gary was gone. I was absolutely terrified.

“Hours later, a stranger saw Gary walking along a road looking confused and lost. They stopped and saw his medical ID, and called MedicAlert and 911 right away. When EMS arrived, MedicAlert gave them all of Gary's medical history. Then MedicAlert immediately called me to arrange getting him home.

“You want to know the crazy part? He was found five miles away from our home! Without Safe & Found, I don’t know what would have happened. Because of MedicAlert, Gary is safe.”

Why wandering protection matters

If you have a loved one with cognitive disabilities like Alzheimer's, dementia or autism, it's not a matter of if wandering will happen, but when. Here’s what you should know:

Alzheimers & Dementia

6 in 10 people with Alzheimer’s or dementia will wander from safety; many do so repeatedly.

If the wanderer isn’t found within 24 hours, there’s a significant risk of injury or death.

Autism & Cognitive Disabilities

Nearly 50% of children with autism attempt to wander from a safe environment.

65% of children’s wandering incidents involve a close call with traffic, and 24% involve a close call with drowning.

These aren’t just numbers—they’re urgent reminders of why it’s so important for your loved one to wear medical identification.

MedicAlert helps reconnect loved ones with their families faster, when every minute matters.

“I’ve been an Emergency Specialist with MedicAlert for 37 years, and one call still stands out. A mom called in—her autistic son was missing. We got in touch with local authorities right away.

When I called her back to tell her we’d found him, I’ll never forget the sound of her sigh— it was just pure relief. That moment? That’s why I do what I do.”
